Jail Crams Female Prisoners Together To Sleep On Floor

Feces in the hallway and female inmates sleeping nearly on top of each other in the intake area are recurring problems at the Livingston County Jail, the sheriff confirmed Friday.

Sheriff Bob Bezotte brought those issues — including a photograph of the sleeping conditions —to light in an e-mail to the Livingston County Board of Commissioners this week, which the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus received through a Freedom of Information Act request on Friday.

“We should never be in a situation where we have eight people sleeping on top of themselves and with one toilet,” the sheriff said when asked about the living conditions at the jail.

“I put myself in that position and I would be furious. … As the sheriff and elected official, I think it¹s my duty to bring this to the attention of the commissioners,” Bezotte said. “This is an ongoing issue we have to deal with. This is not right. Period.”

County Commissioner Ronald Van Houten, who chairs the commission’s public safety committee, believes the photograph and Bezotte¹s comments are merely propaganda.
